    Description
VINTAGE POLYNESIAN SHORT CLUB FIGHTING / CEREMONIAL CLUB from the SAMOAS or TONGA islands, END 19th / BEG. 20th C.
This not common short club, most probably used for ceremonial than tribal war purposes, has a beautiful shape and features original intricately carved geometric designs:
4 stars containing inside each of them floral motifs on one side and patterns on the outline of each side embellish the interesting horizontal belt. Hardwood and very aesthetic in shape, it has an old patina of use dark brown with red reflections over its entire surface.
This type of short club could be used for eventual fights between tribes although the shape and richness of the decorations suggest that it was more used for ritual ceremonies.
The earliest populations of the Samoa archipelago date back around 3000 years.
From the 10th to the 14th centuries, the islands came under Tongan control before regaining their independence, but this period of inter-colonization influenced and brought together the artistic styles between the two islands which became quite close culturally.
European colonization then followed, but despite this, the Samoa and Tonga islands maintain their historical way of life through social link and their languages marked by ancestral cultures. Many ceremonies that pay homage to ancestors are still practiced.
The originality of this piece comes from its age and its rich patina embellished with beautiful traditional patterns.
Guaranteed genuine and contemporary. A certificate of authenticity from our gallery and from Mr. Serge REYNES, certified expert, Origine Expert (Paris) will come along with this beautiful club.
