Old carved-wood canoe prow, Eastern Schouten Islands, New Guinea, c. 1900-1950

Description

This is a powerful old figure that once graced a canoe prow used around the Eastern Schouten Islands just offshore the Sepik River delta of Papua New Guinea.
I purchased it several years ago from Skinner, Inc. Auctioneers and Appraisers of Antiques and Fine Art.  Verbatim description from the auction:  "New Guinea Carved Wood Canoe Prow, Schouten Islands, c. early 20th century, from one of the last ocean-going canoes, the stylized face with traces of red pigment.  Provenance:  Ex-collection Tony Milton."
The figure has near-perfect symmetry and balance and all the authentic characteristics that make Oceanic art so attractive to serious collectors.
It measures approximately 10 inches (high) x 7 inches (wide) x 6 inches (deep).  It comes with a newly-made custom metal stand.  On the stand, it measures 12 inches high.
The mask is in very good condition, with expected losses to some of the wood and color due to prolonged use and exposure to the ocean saltwater.  Some original pigment remains.
I am downsizing and need to find a good home for this amazing Oceanic carving.  It is one of the most impressive pieces of tribal art I've ever collected.
