    Description

This is a Fabulous One of a Kind 1980's Wood Carved Ornate Sacred Flute Mask with Cowrie and Nassa Shells, Boars Tusk, Raffia and Cassowary Bird Feathers all from the Biwat People of the Yuat River Lower Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea. This mask by the Biwat is known by collectors for their powerful sacred flute stopper figures and masks. Sepik Masks from Papua New Guinea come in various styles, which vary mainly depending on the specific region they come from. Not all Sepik River Masks were made to be worn by people. Some masks were made to “decorate” sacred flutes, the front of canoes, as lucky amulets and even yams. Other masks were not made to wear directly on the head but were part of a larger assemblage. This mask is very ornate with a hollow back, prominent slanted eyes, raffia beard, cassowary feathers on the forehead, edged with size matched cowrie and nassa shells and a boars tusk nose bone. This extraordinary mask would be a wonderful addition to your collection.
