    Description

    Here is a nice and rare Maori Taiaha...manufactured pre-mid 19th cent...around 1830s - 50s.
What makes this specimen special is the wooden collar, which would've had hawk feather and/or Kuri dog hair tassels...... minute remnants of the extinct Kuri's fur....still on the collar!..,......................The Kuri became extinct in the 1860s.
2 Paua shell eyes intact - other two lost.
I have owned countless Taiahas to date - this specimen is one of the most beautiful. The dark reddish wood is probably Kohekohe redwood, or, possibly Matai/Kauri (?)
Dark reddish brown patina on certain parts -- owing to much handling.
Looks much better in person -- photos can never capture the true beauty of an old wooden object.
Never restored or repaired - just the usual old age related minor dents/chips/scratches and the natural "defects" of the wood itself.....
    Measures 65 inches / 165 cms
