From a Connecticut Estate Auction comes this
c1890 Buchan's Carbolic Disinfecting Soap #11 VICTORIAN TRADE CARD - The Best Dog Soap In the World.
Measuring 3” x 4 7/8”, this Victorian trade card has a charming image of a boy and girl giving their dog a bath using Buchan's No. 11 Carbolic Disinfecting Soap. The company advertised this as “The best dog soap in the world” and was published by Wemple & Co., New York. The back of the card, as was typical of trade cards and medicine labels of the day claims "The Number Eleven soap is very desirable to use as a disinfectant about the house, water closets, sewer pipes, etc. Bugs will not remain or locate in furniture that is cleaned with this soap".
The bottom of the rear of the card (they didn't believe in the concept of “white space” back then) advertises Buchan's Carbolic Balm Ointment. "People deserve to suffer who neglect a sore or hurt until it becomes inflamed and malignant. Let them use Buchan's Carbolic Balm Ointment. It is not, like many unguents and lotions, over-charged with grease, does not soil the clothing, may be readily washed off, and is otherwise desirable. It remedies with gratifying rapidity, and without scarifying the flesh, ulcers, burns, sore eyes, scalds, eruptions, pimples, barber's itch, fever sores, scrofulous eruptions and other cutaneous diseases and maladies".
This appears to be in excellent antique condition with no defects that I note. I've recently purchased quite a few vintage and antique St. Bernard and Newfoundland items so please watch my listings both for those and what I hope is an interesting and eclectic selection of other vintage and antique items.
