Patent Medicine
Very rare and fascinating "ca. 1880 Chromolithograph Trade Card, Lovely Lady with a Basket on her Head, for the Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge."
The extraordinary Trade Card is printed the typical card stock, and it measures approx. 4-1/2" by 3". This trade card depicts a sweet young maiden in a lovely garden, in a beautiful dress, with a basket on her head. So she's beautiful AND has a sense of humor. Good combination.
The back of the card is where we read about the medicine … Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge. This tonic is essentially designed to ease "Bowel Complaints." Apparently people in the 1800's were no different from people in the 1900's and 2000's. They all have bowel complaints. Only now at least we mostly understand what causes it. In 1800's and even later Doctors threw around big words like dyspepsia and ague, told people that one tonic would cure all their ills. Apparently this one was even billed as a dewormer for children. Yikes!
This wonderful and original "ca. 1890 glossy Chromolithograph Trade Card" is in excellent condition with little to no surface damage or corner wear. There is one little tear on the right hand edge, but the other edges are sound. The chromolithograph illustration is beautiful, very colorful, and incredibly realistic, and the artist used silver-gild in the background with the foliage for an astonishing effect. Apparently this trade card struck a chord with a previous owner, who wrote on the front bottom " Cousin Carrie Jenness" (See the Photos above.)
---------------------
David Jayne
began the study of medicine in 1818 at the University of Pennsylvania. He began by practicing family medicine, eventually introducing his own medicines around 1830, eventually purchased a drug store. By the late 1840s he had successfully marketed 8 proprietary medicines. In 1855 his sons and a partner joined the venture, and until 1940 the company published a medical almanac, primarily as a means to push his patent medicines. Eventually they built a 10-story building in Philadelphia to house the expanding business.
Quack or Patent medicines were very popular in the 1800's. Some contained heroin or morphine. Some contained snake oil. Some worked, some didn't. But in the early 1900's, laws were passed to protect the consumer, which required merchants or companies to prove the efficacy of their product. Many went by the wayside, but Dr. Jayne's stayed, showing that to a certain extent they worked.
Delightful and unique, the "ca. 1880 Chromolithograph Trade Card, Lovely Lady with a Basket on her Head, by the Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge," is a wonderful example Chromolithography of the time, and would be a fantastic addition to any Victorian era collection!!!
