Description
For your consideration is this authentic late 19th century Javanesewayang-topeng
dance mask, carved from wood and painted deep red to represent a principal character such as the king. When an actor puts on a mask, he gives up his own identity and assumes the character of the mask, usually a mythical being such as a demon, hero, monarch or a god.
The face of this noble character is unusually realistic except for the sharply ridged and pointed nose, beneath which there is a hide fragment that once may have been a mustache. He wears a decorated cap; the eyes are large, the eyebrows connected and the delicate mouth is small with exposed teeth.
7.5” (19cm) H. x 5.75” (14.6cm) W. x 5.25” (13.3cm) and in excellent condition.
