I'm not absolutely confident I have the identification right. Writing in Chinese or Japanese beneath photograph. There's also writing on the flag itself.
This photograph is from a collection belonging to a Japanese American family living in California circa 1900s to 1940s. I imagined this was a Japanese flag - but the symbol looks to be of the National Revolutionary Army.
